A very common complaint we hear from men and women is that they hate their neck, and more specifically, they want to get rid of their “turkey neck.” It isn’t surprising given that the skin on the neck is one of the first to show signs of aging. Frequently when we apply sunscreen, the exposed area of the neck is neglected. It is fairly apparent to many people who notice the skin under their chin looks pretty good, while the skin at the bottom of their neck looks saggy, wrinkled or bumpy.
Some people have a genetic predisposition toward a sagging neck, but many people don’t begin to notice the signs of sagging and uneven texture until their mid-forties when skin begins to lose some elasticity.
Fortunately, depending on the level of concern and the condition of the neck, there are several ways to address the problem. The first would be through excellent skin care and the use of a product with Retin-A to help with firming and other products that are considered anti-aging for the face like those with peptides to help firm and restore the skin. Using a broad -spectrum sunscreen on the neck daily is also an important preventative measure. Many patients find the use of Botox to the neck area can be beneficial.
For those who choose to be more aggressive with treatment, there are some non-surgical options like the Exilis Elite, which uses radiofrequency to help heat and tighten the skin and accelerate the building of collagen. Ultherapy is another technique that uses focused ultrasound technology to stimulate collagen often providing significant tightening to the neck and providing improved skin tone.
Often those who don’t like their neck site that little pocket of fat that tends to rest under the chin or the look of those platysmal bands that begin to show through skin that has become thinner as primary concerns. These areas are best addressed through a neck lift, which is often combined with liposuction and frequently with a lower facelift.
There are many options for helping a neck that is showing signs of environmental damage or aging. Luckily, today no one really needs to live with a “turkey neck” except for turkeys.

Maintaining Facelift Results

When my patients invest in a surgical facelift, it is not surprising that they want their results to be maintained for as long as possible. So what’s the secret to keeping your facelift looking fresh and your appearance more youthful?
The number one thing that helps maintain that youthful appearance is taking great care of your skin. Maintaining your skin from the inside out is a great way to keep your skin looking fresh. A diet that includes fresh fish, chicken, nuts, vegetables and fruits will provide you with a healthy glow. Keeping well hydrated is also important for helping skin look fresh and decrease the appearance of wrinkles.
Engaging in a great skin care routine with the help of an aesthetician or dermatologist is another benefit. Any dark spots, or broken capillaries can be reduced or eliminated with an IPL laser or through physician based skin care products such as hydroquinone. Gentle, regular exfoliation of the face rids the skin of dry skin cells revealing a more refreshed appearance. Many women and men use a retinol cream or gel at night to maintain a youthful skin appearance. Our skin care aesthetician, Lisa Perdue, is well trained in helping our patients find products and services that are personalized for maximum results. No maintenance of skin can be complete without the use of a broad-range sunscreen every day, not just in the summer.
Beyond skincare, many of our patients are using our non-surgical procedures such as Ultherapy or Exilis Elite on an annual basis to stimulate collagen beneath the surface of the skin and maintain their facelift results. Exilis offers the benefit of decreasing fat under the chin and neck, while Ultherapy can help subtly lift the brow area and tighten the skin. The occasional use of Botox or Xeomin, or facial fillers that add volume to the face such as Radiesse or Voluma can also be of benefit. With proper maintenance, your facelift result and, therefore, satisfaction will be greatly increased.

There are many new non-surgical devices for improving appearance that come on the market each year. Deciding which technology to choose that makes sense for our practice and patients can be a bit daunting. We look for devices that are FDA approved, safe, and can offer significant, effective results. Some years there are no non-surgical devices that fit our criteria. This year, we have added BTL’s Exilis ELITE to our line of non-surgical treatment options.
A second generation device, Exilis ELITE utilizes radiofrequency technology that targets fat cells for body contouring and also offers skin tightening benefits. It is an office procedure that requires about an hour per treatment. For facial treatments where skin tightening is the goal, 3-4 treatments spaced about 7-14 days apart are recommended. For body contouring 4-5 treatment sessions are typically required depending on the body area and specific concerns.
Performed by our medical aesthetician or our registered nurse, patients remain comfortable while the warm applicator is moved quickly over the treatment area. A built-in cooling device insure that the skin does not become too hot. Depending on whether the goal is body contouring or skin tightening, the RF settings can be adjusted for various depths for maximum effectiveness.
Unlike our Ultherapy treatment, which uses ultrasound technology for lifting and tightening the skin, and ourCoolSculpting device, which uses cryolypolisis to freeze the fat, using radio frequency technology, our Exilis ELITE is able to treat other areas that have been impossible to treat with the other devices. In addition to face, neck, abdomen, and back fat the Exilis ELITE can be used on arms, knees, male breast, and thighs safely. This has been a real benefit for patients who seek fat reduction or skin tightening in those areas. While not a replacement for liposuction or a facelift, for patients who do not want surgery, Exilis ELITE offers a safe and effective alternative for skin tightening and targeted fat reduction.
